Microsoft Active Directory Federation Services is an on-premises identity federation solution designed for IT security teams. It enables users to access the systems and applications located across organizational boundaries, verify the identity of security principals existing in an organization's directory, control the employee's account and credentials, manage the authentication process through a proxy service hosted between AD and the target application, and grant and restrict the permission to share user's identity and access rights. Features include integration with Windows Authentication (IWA), password management, guest account provisioning, legacy applications management, and claims-based authentication.
